Visitor Management Information

Lake Mary - Purple Downs Station

Background

Lake Mary is an important Kokatha mythological site located on a working cattle property known as Purple Downs Station. The Station is managed by Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd.

Lake Mary is a freshwater lake which holds substantial water supplies for several years after good rain. The margins of the lake have important archaeological camp sites from the large traditional gatherings of people that were held there in the past.

Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd seeks to establish culturally appropriate ways for the Public to experience Lake Mary which has high conservation, heritage and cultural values and is sensitive to visitor impacts.

Visitors to Lake Mary

Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd management strongly discourages the Public to visit Lake Mary. Recent rainfall will provide an opportunity for the Lake and surrounding area to recover from degradation caused by previous high visitor impact.

Effective 20 October – Visitors must adhere to Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd Management Rules:

Public Use: daylight hours only, with no camping allowed unless by permit.
Gated single access point of highway and vehicle track to be always used.
Dogs and cats are not permitted. (Area regularly baited).
Chainsaws and the collection of firewood not permitted.
Motorbikes, Side X Sides, Quads, Motorboats or Buggy’s not permitted.
Recreational driving not permitted.
Drive only on well worn tracks, do not leave tracks in your vehicle.
Removal of rocks, soil or vegetation not permitted.
All rubbish must be removed by users.
Public enters at OWN RISK.

Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd management will be conducting regular daily visits to Lake Mary from 21 October 2022. Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd management seeks help from the Public to ensure Management Rules are followed and our land and heritage continues to be protected and enjoyed by future generations of Kokatha families.

Kokatha Pastoral Land Manager

Kokatha Pastoral currently manage three pastoral stations and employ staff in accordance with their business plan. Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Purple Downs stations are located in an arid environment approximately 560 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia. The properties are approximately 500,000 Ha and encompass sacred aboriginal sites, wildlife corridors, a working cattle station and a huge variety of significant arid zone flora and fauna.

An opportunity now exists to continue to manage the properties’ natural resources, infrastructure development and cattle agistment business, as well as investigate and develop alternative business opportunities including on site accommodation, tourism and biodiversity credit projects. Outside contractors or livestock owners attend to livestock management as needed. Paid casual employment may also be available for a partner in hospitality/tourism aspects.

The Kokatha Pastoral Land Manager plays an important role within Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd (KP) and is accountable for managing a small team that delivers projects and initiatives to achieve improved environmental and agricultural sustainability. The aim of the business and projects are to protect and enhance natural assets by increasing the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices.

The successful applicant will have professional qualifications and/or substantial equivalent experience in agriculture or environmental science, with a sound knowledge of the principles of natural resource management.
