Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) is seeking strong, passionate Kokatha women to join our Kokatha Ranger Program, working on Country and caring for culture, land and community.

📍 Location: Roxby Downs Station, working across the Kokatha Native Title Determination and surrounds

🕒 Positions: Full-time (permanent), with part-time and casual roles also available

This is an exciting, hands-on role supporting Kokatha People’s aspirations to care for Country through Indigenous-led land management.

You’ll work closely with Elders, the Station Manager and on-ground teams, building skills, protecting heritage, and strengthening Kokatha capacity for today and into the future.

JOIN THE MIRU PROJECT – MEN’S WOODCARVING WORKSHOP

Ku Arts and Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation invite you to take part in a special Men’s Woodcarving Workshop, where you’ll learn to carve your own Miru (traditional spear-thrower) using both traditional and contemporary techniques.

Dates: Thursday 14 – Saturday 16 August

Location: 45 Press Road, Port Augusta West

Time: 10am – 3pm daily

This workshop is open to all men – no experience needed!

All tools and materials are provided.

LORE SUPPORT – NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS

Kokatha members and Common Law Holders can now apply for Lore Support as part of our FY26 Community Assistance Programs.

Each eligible applicant can access up to $1,000 for items that help support and strengthen cultural practice.

Currently this can only cover cultural ceremonies and gatherings (such as Men’s/Women’s Business).

Please note: We’re unable to provide reimbursements, cash, vouchers, or support for vehicle expenses or non-Kokatha activities under this program.

MIRU PROJECT LAUNCHES ON KOKATHA COUNTRY

Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation is proud to share that the first Miru Project camp took place last week on Kokatha Country, within the Woomera Protected Area.

Led by master carver and Kokatha man Shane Wright, the camp brought men together to connect, yarn, and begin reviving traditional carving practices in a culturally safe and supportive setting.

Check out the stunning photos captured by photographer Stefan Armbruster, which beautifully document the powerful moments shared during the camp.

This is just the beginning! The Miru Project—delivered in partnership with Ku Arts and the Powerhouse Museum — will include more On Country camps in Roxby Downs, Andamooka, and Woomera, as well as carving workshops in Port Augusta during NAIDOC Week.

The project will culminate with an exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney in 2026.

We’re now calling out to Kokatha men who are interested in joining this important project.

NEW KAC CHC CHAIR

Jonathon Fatt-Clifton has been elected as the new Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) Culture and Heritage Committee (CHC) Chairperson.

Mr. Fatt-Clifton was voted in at a KAC Board meeting held in Port Augusta last week, jointly attended by CHC members.

A resolution was also passed that the bulk emails that have been sent out pertaining to be from the CHC did not follow KAC process and protocol and were not representative of the majority of the CHC.

Other items discussed at the joint meeting included:

◾Suggested names for the Oak Dam BHP mining exploration site.

◾Establishing a timeline for strategic planning and ensuring regular updates between the KAC Board and CHC.

◾Enhancing communication and procedural integrity in membership vetting.

◾Implementing better communication of CHC activities and feedback mechanisms.

MALKA ART PRIZE

The Malka Aboriginal Art Prize was initiated by the late Mr. Marvin McKenzie Senior, whose vision was to have an Aboriginal Art Show, providing Aboriginal community members with a space to showcase their work.

‘Malka’ is a word used by several Aboriginal language groups in the Port Augusta region, meaning mark or painting.

2023 will be the 14th year the Malka Aboriginal Art Prize has been held.

Entries are eligible for:

2023 Malka Grand Prize – $20,000 (Mr. Marvin McKenzie Senior Award) – sponsored by the Bungala Solar Farm (Sustainability Arts Partner 2023).
People’s Choice Award – $2,500.
Elder Award (60 years or over as of 01/01/2023) – $2,500.
Youth/Junior Award (15 years or under as of 01/01/2023) – $1000.

Preserving Roxby Downs Station Pastoral History

Steps were taken by Kokatha Pastoral recently to preserve the old Roxby Downs Station shearing shed. Anyone who may have visited the old shed over the past few months may have noticed the roof was badly damaged, with parts swinging in the breeze.

This week the old roof was removed, new roofing iron and fascia boards installed, and damaged rafters repaired.

The wonderful timber construction and amazing hardwood floors are again safe from the severe desert elements.

Standing tall on the Roxby Downs Station gibber plains the shed and its memories preserved for another 50 years!

Kokatha start to NAIDOC Week 2022 (3-11 July).

We pay our respects to Australia’s First Nations people and the custodians of this land which was never ceded. It always was & always will be Aboriginal land.

The 2022 Theme: Get Up Stand Up Show Up invites us all to embrace our First Nations cultural knowledge and understanding of country, and to work together to recognize, protect and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
