The IDA Women’s Leadership Trip to Perth was a valuable opportunity for Desert Women Rangers to come together, strengthen our leadership skills, share our experiences and learn from one another.

The trip provided a supportive environment where women could connect, build confidence and recognise the important roles we play within the Desert Rangers Program and our communities.

We were welcomed with a beautiful Welcome to Country by Noongar Elder Liz, which set a meaningful tone for the trip. It was a special opportunity to come together, acknowledge Country and connect with other Desert Women Rangers who share a passion for caring for Country and supporting our communities.

Throughout the trip, we shared stories, experiences and ideas, learning from one another and offering encouragement and support. These conversations highlighted the strength, knowledge and leadership that women bring to the Rangers Program.

During the trip, we participated in leadership workshops focused on developing our skills, building confidence and strengthening our ability to lead within our ranger teams.

One of the outcomes was working together to develop a women’s leadership session for the next IDA Conference, to be held in November 2026. This session will be delivered by Desert Women Leaders. This was a significant achievement, as it created an opportunity for desert women to take ownership of the session, share their knowledge and experiences, and lead the learning process themselves.

IDA staff were very impressed with the leadership sessions this year, stating that this was the first time a leadership session had been prepared and would be presented by Desert Women Rangers. This recognition was a proud moment and demonstrated the growth, capability and leadership potential of the women involved.

During the trip, I was given the opportunity to participate in an interview about what it is like to be part of the Desert Rangers Program and to share my personal experiences.

Although I was very nervous, I was grateful that they saw potential in me and wanted to hear my story. The experience encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and recognise that my experiences, knowledge and perspective are worth sharing.

It was a valuable reminder that leadership is not only about having the confidence to speak in front of others, but also about being willing to share your journey, represent your team and inspire others through your experiences.

I walked away from the leadership trip with a newfound sense of purpose. There are many beautiful stories that I will carry with me, and the reassurance that I am on the right track.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this experience. I have gained new ideas, knowledge and confidence that I can bring back to my team. I look forward to sharing what I have learnt, encouraging other women and continuing to contribute to the growth and development of our ranger program.

CEG is calling for registrations in its upcoming Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation.

This qualification provides the practical skills needed to carry out a range of basic tasks in the above industries.

Dates – 23 November until 18 December 2026

Location – Port Augusta

Subsidised fee – $500

This course is delivered in person and you must be aged 16 years or over to take part.

Come along to our Aboriginal Families Playgroup, run by our very own KAC Community Development Officer Shonelle Reid, at the Port Augusta Children’s Centre.

Everyone is welcome!

The playgroup is a great opportunity for families to spend time together, meet other families, and support their children’s learning through play.

There will be different activities every week, all in a welcoming and family friendly environment.

Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) is proud to have sponsored the recent Andamooka Colour Run.

This year’s event brought the community together for a day of colour, laughter and fun, with 157 registered participants and more than 200 people, including volunteers, joining in the celebrations.

Beyond the colour and fun, the event raises funds that go back into the Andamooka community, supporting emergency relief, youth activities, children’s and seniors’ programs, and other important local initiatives.

At KAC we’re pleased to support events that bring families together on Kokatha Country and strengthen community connections.

A special shout-out to our very own Kokatha Ranger Amelia McKenzie, who stepped in to help run a station at the event.

Congratulations to the Andamooka Colour Run team, volunteers and everyone who helped make this year’s event such a success!

We look forward to seeing the Colour Run return in 2027, alongside the Andamooka school’s 80th birthday celebrations!

Do you want to make a difference on Country?

Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) is looking for Rangers to join the Kokatha Ranger Program and help care for Kokatha Country.

Based at Roxby Downs Station, this is a hands-on, outdoor role for people who enjoy working on Country, protecting the environment and being part of a team.

What you’ll be doing:

Caring for Country and supporting cultural activities

Monitoring threatened species

Weed and fire management

Station work, fencing, cattle monitoring and maintaining watering points

Working alongside Rangers, Elders, Traditional Owners and cultural advisors

Working with partner organisations and taking part in training and development

About you

You enjoy practical outdoor work, work well in a team and are willing to travel to remote locations, including camping when required. A current driver’s licence is essential. Experience in land management, driving 4WDs, local flora and fauna or field data collection will be an advantage.

This is an incredible opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that supports Kokatha People and the ongoing care of Country.
