RARB means Recognised Aboriginal Representative Body.

On 29 October 2021 KAC was appointed RARB for its native title determination area.

KAC is the first approved by the State Aboriginal Heritage Committee under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988, and it will now represent the views and negotiate on behalf of all Traditional Owners of Aboriginal cultural heritage within its appointment area. The appointment will see Traditional Owners directly negotiate the way Aboriginal cultural heritage is managed under development. Its appointment follows that of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara and Maralinga Tjarutja RARBs, which were automatically appointed when the legislation was amended in 2017.

BEFORE

Before now the Government had overall responsibility to protect Aboriginal heritage across all of South Australia

~ except Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) and Maralinga Tjarutja (MT) which were granted RARB status at proclamation.

NOW

With RARB status KAC has the responsibility to act on behalf of all Traditional Owners to protect heritage within Kokatha Native Title Determination Area

And the Government still has responsibility for all other areas of SA

Kokatha people now have the right to manage their heritage.

Kokatha people now have the final say in what happens to our heritage.

Government previously negotiated on our behalf – now we can negotiate on our terms.

RARB Status gives us better options at the negotiation tablåe (eg. with BHP)

Acquiring RARB status is another step on the journey to Self Determination
