MEDIA ENGAGEMENT & PROTOCOLS

When engaging with media — including photography, video, interviews, and digital content — it is essential to follow Kokatha cultural protocols:

Permission and Consent: No media involving Kokatha people, cultural sites, ceremonies, or artefacts should be recorded, published, or shared without the explicit permission of the relevant Traditional Owners or custodians.

Respect for Cultural Sensitivities: Certain knowledge, images, or practices may be restricted due to cultural law, gender-specific protocols, or spiritual significance. These restrictions must be strictly observed.

Collaboration: Media projects involving Kokatha culture or Country should be undertaken in partnership with KAC to ensure accuracy, respect, and appropriate cultural oversight.

OUR COMMITMENT

KAC is dedicated to ensuring that all media and archival activities involving Kokatha culture are carried out with the highest respect, cultural sensitivity, and community involvement. This helps protect Kokatha cultural heritage and promotes positive representation and understanding.

ARCHIVING & CULTURAL CUSTODIANSHIP

KAC holds responsibility for the management and preservation of Kokatha cultural materials, including:

  • Oral histories, stories, and songlines
  • Photographs, artworks, and artefacts
  • Audio and video recordings of ceremonies and cultural events

Archiving these materials ensures that Kokatha heritage is preserved for future generations and used only in ways that honour Kokatha law and customs.

ACCESS TO ARCHIVAL MATERIALS

Access to archived cultural materials is controlled by KAC in accordance with Kokatha cultural protocols:

  • Requests for access by researchers, media, or the public are carefully considered and require approval from Traditional Owners.
  • Sensitive or restricted materials may be available only to specific community members or under certain conditions to protect cultural knowledge.
  • KAC may facilitate cultural awareness and interpretation to ensure that archival materials are understood and respected appropriately.
