KAC staff involved in Western Access Road opening

The Carrapateena Western Access Road (WAR) is now open and operational.

One year ago, November 2020, EXACT Contracting started working on the 53km of road construction of this project. This included major works at the Stuart Highway intersection. The finalising of this road will allow for year round access to the Carrapateena site and a safer and more cost efficient route to the Highway.

Prior to any work being undertaken at each area the Kokatha Heritage team surveyed the area and helped with the road design regarding the areas the road could and couldn’t go. The Kokatha Heritage monitors overlooked the construction of the road works.

The contract with EXACT had considerable benefits for Kokatha People with respect to employment and training.

  • 7 Kokatha members have been given opportunity to obtain Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations.
  • 1 Kokatha member opportunity to obtain Certificate IV in Work, Health and Safety.
  • 1 Kokatha member apprenticeship for Diesel Mechanic
  • 1 Kokatha member awarded Scholarship to for an Environmental Science degree

KAC equipment  was also hired by EXACT for the project including

  • 2 x water tankers
  • 1 x roller and operator to extend to a back to back
  • 1 x grader

Now that the construction is complete, Kokatha Mining Services will be taking over the road maintenance contract of the Western Access Road.

Thanks to Kokatha Heritage Teams help with the design, heritage works and monitoring no disruption of cultural sites was achieved.

During this time the Kokatha Mining Services road crew successfully kept the Southern Access Road in great condition.

The efforts made from KAC employees, the Kokatha community and collaborative partnerships with OZ Minerals and EXACT have contributed to this amazing milestone being met.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED.
