DISCOVERY FOR RECOVERY - MONITORING THREATENED SPECIES ON KOKATHA COUNTRY

Kokatha Pastoral (KP) has teamed up with SA Arid Lands and Arid Recovery to kick off an important new project: Discovery for Recovery – monitoring the recovery of threatened species on Kokatha Country.

KP workers Shaqkoden Warren, Graham O’Toole and Adam Wagner spent two days last week installing 60 trail cameras across Roxby Downs Station and Andamooka Station.

These cameras will help monitor the return of threatened species in areas surrounding the Arid Recovery reserve, especially the endangered western quoll, as well as plains mice and other native species impacted by threats like feral cats.

The quolls began escaping the predator proof fence at Arid Recovery soon after they were introduced to Arid Recovery, but this is the first time that the team will be able to see how successful they are at establishing populations outside the reserve.

This is a three-year project funded by SAAL in collaboration with Arid Recovery, and it’s a great opportunity for Kokatha Rangers to build skills in data collection and monitoring technology.

We can’t wait to see what the cameras capture in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates and photos of the team in action! 📸🐾
