Successful Heritage Workshop for Kokatha People held.

On 16th March 2021 the Kokatha Heritage team held a Heritage Workshop at Central Augusta Oval in Port Augusta what was attended by 17 Kokatha people.

This workshop was facilitated by Matt Schlitz, Principal Heritage Officer and Amy Ziesing, Senior Heritage Officer from Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

The participants were shown the process of what to do when out on country when you come across Aboriginal sites, objects and remains. The Legislation (The Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988) was covered as well as how to appropriately report and monitor any discovery of  Aboriginal Artifacts, objects or remains.

On the day the participants had the opportunity to observe a display of artifacts to help them understand what to look for and understand how these artifacts were used in the past by our ancestors.

As a result of this workshop the Heritage Services Team now has 17 more people eligible to add to our team with continued support through training. We look forward to holding another one of these workshops later in the year.

If you are interested in being part of a future training then please notify our Heritage Services Trainee Manager, Carly Chamberlain on
